Space Advertising in India: Examples, Permissions and How It Works
Space advertising in India today mostly means near-space: a high-altitude balloon carries a camera and a brand's product or flag to the edge of space and films it. This guide covers what has been done in India, what permissions are involved and how a brand can run one.
What space advertising means
There are two very different ideas. Orbital advertising, such as a billboard visible from the ground, is controversial and has drawn calls for a ban from astronomers. Near-space advertising is different: a balloon rises to around 100,000 feet, the camera films the curve of the Earth, and the footage is used as brand content. This post is about near-space.
An Indian example
Quick-commerce platform Zepto worked with tech creator Soham M Rai, known as Zikiguy, on a Republic Day launch that lifted the Indian flag to around 100,000 feet on a hydrogen balloon, according to press coverage. Reports say the team coordinated with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation and air traffic control for airspace permission, and that Zepto backed the project.
It shows the pattern: a national moment, one striking film and a creator to carry it.
What a launch needs
Airspace permission is the main one. A balloon passes through controlled airspace, so the launch site, time and flight path are planned with the aviation authorities. The team also needs a tracking and recovery plan for the payload, a camera setup that survives the cold, and a clear idea of what the film must show.
Who can run one
A brand can work with a near-space specialist and an agency that handles the creative, creators and press around the film. Dhi & Kin has partnered with Sent Into Space, whose campaigns for Samsung, Oreo, Visa, Mattel and the ICC are on our space page. We plan the idea and the India launch, and shape the film for Indian audiences.
What to decide first
Choose the one claim the film should prove, the moment it should land on and where the footage will run. Then work backwards to the launch date and permissions.
